This piece was an investigation of global exploitation and depletion of natural resource, a recurrent theme in my work, taken here through the lens of coffee production. I wanted to question the sanitised nature of ‘fair trade’ products as presented in the Global North; how the iconography of ‘natural’ and ‘slow process’ feed into a practice of looking away or past histories of exploitation. A major export of my own country of residence to nations in the Global South is ‘recycling’--by placing these scrubbed-clean narratives of import and export alongside each other, I hoped to darken that narrative circle.
